Glacier National Park Hosts Students For a Lake Ecology BioBlitz

Students contributed to the collection of scientific data as part of a NPS centennial project.

WEST GLACIER, MONT – The Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center (CCRLC) at Glacier National Park hosted 45 students from Flathead and Columbia Falls High Schools in Montana, De La Salle Collegiate High School from Warren, Michigan, and Luther College from Decorah, Iowa for the Glacier Lake Ecology BioBlitz on May 25-26th. Students observed loons nesting, feeding, calling, and interacting on lakes in the North Fork area of Glacier National Park.

Black Bear Euthanized

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Yesterday, Glacier National Park Rangers euthanized a black bear in Apgar Village, a populated area of the Park, after several reports in which the bear exhibited apparent food-conditioned behavior.
On Tuesday, June 7, the same bear was involved in an incident at Fish Creek Campground in which the bear grabbed food out of an open vehicle trunk at an occupied campsite while campers were eating at a picnic table a few feet away. The bear consumed the food and left the area. Park rangers set a trap for the bear but the bear was not caught.

On their way to work on the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) on April 21, 2016, plowing crews discovered an avalanche more than 30 feet deep blocking the road at Haystack Creek.
