Our KSEN/K96 Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week rose to the literal top of their fields in track and golf last week.

And our male athlete of the week still has the chance to jump to an even higher peak this weekend at the State B Track Meet. In a discussion with a fellow sports fan recently, I heard the comment that "even he may not yet realize how good of an athlete he is". They were referring to Cut Bank senior Seth Omsberg who certainly is bringing out his best athletic abilities in track and field this spring. At the northern B Divisional in Glasgow last weekend, Omsberg again went six feet six inches in the high jump. That is currently third best in the state among all classes. At the State B meet last year, Seth went six feet two inches and finished second. It was interesting to note that all six places at the state meet last year went six feet two inches and the places were determined by how many attempts they needed to make a particular height. Omsberg is also currently fourth best in class B in the long jump and won the divisional meet with a leap of 21 feet, three inches. Part of his athletic ability is speed, he won the 100M dash in a time of 11.2 seconds, which is currently fourth best among class B sprinters.

Our female athlete of the week pulled off a feat that I don't think many were even considering. Senior, Katara  Ryan, the only golfer on the North Toole County girls golf team, came back from a nine-stroke deficit on day one of the State C tournament at Seeley Lake and won the state championship. Inclement weather, maybe some nerves and frustration gave her a first day total of 103, but a little more focus on the little things along with some persistance, she cut 14 strokes off that first day total and was able to overtake the leader to win it all. Katara was the first girl ever to win a state golf championship from North Toole County and one of only two (male or female) to win the championship. One of her coaches, Zach Johannsen was the other one who won the boys' state title in 2011. She credited Zach and coach, Jay Johannsen, for getting her up the success ladder to a state title.

Congratulations to our KSEN/K96 - Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week; senior Seth Omsberg of Cut Bank and senior, Katara Ryan of North Toole County. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald's in Cut Bank. McDonald's honors our athletes with two free value meals each.

And we encourage fans, coaches, teammates and parents to nominate athletes of the week. If you think they've had an exceptional performance email me at mark.daniels@townsquaremedia.com.
