KSEN/K96 – Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the week once again beat out a talented field of nominees.
If you’re running the ball against the CJI Hawks, you’d better stay clear of middle linebacker Brett Henke. Henke recorded 16 tackles in the Hawks’ win last week over conference foe, Centerville, and while for most defenders that would be one huge night, coach Jim Vinson says his senior standout is averaging about that many. Henke also had one interception and 11 of those 16 tackles were solo stops. On the offensive side, the fullback-type runner had 150 yards on 29 carries, 94 kick return yards and one touchdown. It was Henke’s fifth gave in a row with more than 100 yards and in two of those games he was over 200.
Our female Athlete of the week accomplished something that some believe is a first ever feat in the nearly 70 year old organization known as the NRA. 17 Year old home schooled senior Shelby Rasmussen not only won the all-around title, but also the barrel racing and the breakaway roping. Heading into the finals she told us the all-around and barrels were goals, but the breakaway seemed almost out of reach from a seventh place start. She was the last to run on the third night and says she was somewhat aware that all she had to do was rope the calf and record a time to win the average. Pressure on, no problem and she wins the event. When all was said and done Shelby captured the all-around title by more than $7,200 and won the average and year-end titles in both the breakaway and barrel racing. Shelby credits her mother, Katie, for most of the coaching and teaching, even to the point of saying “The intricate care and training of horses. Mom is also a barrel racer and past Montana Circuit Finals Qualifier.” She says she grew up on the road and had a big thank you to her mom and dad, PBR Clown, Flint Rasmussen. Even after the big weekend, Shelby still has big goals in mind.
Also nominated this week, Shelby Coyote Libero, senior Alissa Buck who served a perfect 27 for 27 in Shelby’s win over Conrad last week. Included in that total was nine serves in a row that brought Shelby back from a 24-16 deficit in the third game including three aces in that run.
Other male nominees included, North Toole County quarterback, Lane Lerum, who tossed seven touchdown passes in the Refiners’ tough loss to Geraldine/Highwood. He now has 26 touchdown passes on the season.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96 Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, senior Brett Henke of CJI and senior Shelby Rasmussen of Choteau.
