A tradition seems to have come to an end in Baltimore, and we will probably never know why...because we never knew who.

Last evening, on the 202nd anniversary of Edgar Allen Poe's birth, a handful of his faithful fans gathered to see if the mysterious stranger who had visited the author's grave every year from 1940 through 2009, would return. He...we presume it was a he...always left three red roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac. Last year the "Poe Toaster" failed to appear. Last night he was a no-show again. There were four imposters- "Faux Toasters", the faithful gathered at the graveyard fence called them.

So it appears the mystery will remain just that.

It's poetic, really.
