BOZEMAN — Montana State University earned recent recognition from two organizations that rank top colleges, U.S. News & World Report and College Factual.

MSU is again ranked among the top universities in the nation in U.S. News & World Report's 2021 annual college guide and rankings released this month. In U.S. News’ “Best Colleges 2021” guidebook, MSU tied for 132nd place in the top public schools category. MSU also tied for 263rd overall in the best national universities category, which includes both public and private institutions.

Rankings are based on several key measures of academic quality, including first-year student retention and graduation of students; faculty resources; student excellence; financial resources and alumni giving; and expert opinion.

In addition to MSU’s rankings in the top public schools category and the best national universities category, MSU was recognized with the following rankings:

  • No. 96, best undergraduate nursing
  • No. 131, best undergraduate engineering
  • No. 178, best undergraduate computer science
  • No. 244, best undergraduate business

MSU programs also received recognition in College Factual’s 2022 best schools rankings. Among other distinctions, MSU earned the top Montana spot in a number of categories, including best business, management and marketing bachelor’s degree school; best education master’s degree school; best psychology bachelor’s degree school; best liberal arts/sciences and humanities school; best business, management and marketing school; best psychology school; best biological and biomedical sciences school; best teacher education subject specific school; best liberal arts general studies school; and best biological and biomedical sciences bachelor’s degree schools.
