Minor Flooding Reported in Glacier National Park
WEST GLACIER - Minor flooding has been occuring in Glacier National Park. Park Public Affairs Officer Gina Kerzman reports that Campground loop A at Saint Mary Campground is closed because of flooding and so is the trail to Avalanche Lake. which is a very popular hike. The quarter circle bridge is closed, so trailheads accessed via that bridge are also inaccessible.
Videos posted on Facebook Tuesday showed water running off the hillsides and over the driving lanes on US-2 between Hungry Horse and Columbia Falls.
Weather is also hampering efforts to open Going-to-the-Sun Road for the season. “We've had several days where avalanche conditions were dangerously high and crews weren't able to work as much as we had hoped," Kerzman said. "We'd also had some areas that have slid several times. Triple arches have slid three times and three times the crew has had to dig it out.” The National Weather Service says up to 10" of new snow had fallen in the higher elevations of the park as of this afternoon.
Glacier National Park released this video footage of the park's Road Crew clearing the Triple Arches Area of Going-to-the-Sun Road after it slid over Memorial Day Weekend. The crew is in and out of low visibility conditions. (Credit: Flickr/NPS)
