Educators Invited to Apply for Buffalo Curriculum Workshop in Yellowstone

BOZEMAN — Educators from across the United States are invited to apply to participate in a weeklong workshop focused on implementing curriculum about the history and revitalization of buffalo. The residential program will be held near Gardiner outside Yellowstone National Park.

The new Buffalo Nations Landmarks program is a collaboration between Fort Peck Community College, Montana State University and Missoula-based Ecology Project International. The program recognizes the importance of revitalizing relationships between the Indigenous peoples and nations who relied on the buffalo as their primary source of food and products, the American bison, and the lands within and surrounding Yellowstone National Park, according to its website.

Two groups of educators will be selected for the workshop. One group will meet Aug. 2-8, and the second group will meet Aug. 9-15. K-12 teachers and other educators are eligible to apply.

Faculty for the program include Roxann Smith from Fort Peck Community College, Alexei Desmarais from Ecology Project International and Christine Stanton, Jill Falcon Ramaker and Kay Ann Miller from MSU. Guest presenters are expected to include Jason Baldes, Helen J. Augare Carlson, Shane Doyle, Laura Ferguson, Chris Geremia, Mike Jetty, Dennis Jorgensen, Robert McAnally and Bill Stockton.

The deadline to apply for the program is Friday, March 3. Selected educators will receive a stipend to help cover their expenses.

The Buffalo Nations Landmarks program is funded through a National Endowment for the Humanities’ Landmarks of American History and Culture grant of the Division of Education Programs.
