When Lorna J. Brunelle became ill with thyroid cancer, the iodine treatment, one little purple pill, made her radioactive and began to fight the cancer cells her thyroidectomy surgery left behind. In her book, "Dirty Bomb Shell, From Thyroid Cancer Back to Fabulous", Brunelle lends wit, charm and humor to her learning to swallow the fact that to become well, she must first become a human "dirty bombshell" without alienating family and friends, or losing herself. Lorna is my special guest this afternoon (Monday) at 4:35 on the Puffman Show. You don't hear much about this thyroid disease, but last year, there were nearly 45,000 new cases resulting in 1700 deaths according to the National Cancer Institute. Thyroid cancer, which occurs more often in women, has a 97%, five-year survival rate. Brunelle says her goal is to raise awareness for what is now the fastest rising cancer in women in the United States. It is interesting to note that today, there are an estimated 350,000 people in our country living with thyroid cancer. I'm looking forward to meeting Lorna this afternoon, she's a graduate of the Boston Conservatory and has dedicated her life to fostering creativity and self-expression through art. She's the official vocal coach for the Miss Massachusetts Pageant and a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singers. I may belt out a chorus or two of "New York, New York" for her sometime during the interview. In all seriousness, it's a wonderful book with a happy ending. (6 months after her flawless surgery, she had the honor of singing "Amazing Grace" in full volume with the amplification of a microphone at the Bourne National Cemetery for her grandfather's funeral. This woman resolved to dig down deep in her soul and find the fight to push through the hardship of a cancer diagnosis and come out the other side a survivor. Thyroid cancer has new cases cropping up at a rate of approximately 4% annually-faster than colon or breast cancer. I'll be giving away a copy of Lorna's book, "Dirty Bombshell-From Thyroid Cancer back to Fabulous" (rated as an Amazon Best Seller ranking #52 in Spiritual & Religious) following my interview this afternoon. Oh, the title? Lorna says "In my early 20's, I was a pretty bombshell. In my early 30's, I had become a toxic DIRTY BOMB! So in a way, I had become a "dirty bombshell". Thus, the title of the book. I guess this is one less thing for the Puffman to worry about...I don't have one (a thyroid) mine was "radiated out" some years back. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason that I can sing so well. See you this later this afternoon at 4:35...
