Love ‘The Princess Bride’? Try the Wine

The Princess Bride Wine

Yao Ming has one, and so does the rock band Train. So why wouldn’t the  movie ‘The Princess Bride’ have a signature wine?

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1987 cult classic film, a line of  ’Princess Bride’ wines will be released under the label ‘Bottle of Wits.’ Tim League, the CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which is behind the line, explained the name, which is a pun.

The Battle of Wits sequence between Cary Elwes and Wallace Shawn easily stands toe-to-toe with the ‘Sideways”s spit bucket and ‘The Silence of the Lambs”s Chianti slurp as wine’s shining moment in film.

Fans of film will remember the scene where Elwes’ dashing Westley tricks VIzzini (Shawn) into drinking poisoned wine. They should also have no problem figuring why Bottle of Wits’s California Cabernet is called “Inconceivable Cab,’ and its white goes by “As You Wish White.”

As for the how they taste, the wines won’t be released until the middle of the month, so the reviews aren’t in yet. But seeing as the movie itself was only a modest success when it hit theaters in 1987, and has since become recognized as an all-time comedy classic, maybe ‘Bottle of Wits’ wines should enjoy a similar fate and be stowed away in the cellar for about a decade before opening.
