Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen Apologizes for Revealing ‘I Love Fidel Castro’

If you had “less than one week” in your How Long Into The Baseball Season Will Ozzie Guillen Say Something Offensive pool, you are a winner.

In a recent Time magazine article, the outspoken new manger of the Miami Marlins stated, ‘I love Fidel Castro.” This certainly didn’t endear him to Miami’s large Cuban community, many of whom fled their island homeland because of the long-time dictator’s policies.

“I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (SOB) is still here,” Gullien also said, adding fuel to the fire.

But by Saturday, Gullien realized he screwed up, and issued a mea culpa during a press conference.

“I want to apologize for the things (I said) that hurt somebody’s feelings,” Guillen told reporters. “I want them to know I’m against everything … the way (Castro has) treated people the last 60 years. I’ve read a lot about him.”

As fans of the Chicago White Sox — Guillen’s previous club — can attest, this surely won’t be the last time Guillen says something controversial. But the fact that the famously stubborn 48-year old apologized so quickly suggests that this time at least he realized how much he stepped in it.
