A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACHING LEGEND….THERE ARE NOT MANY MONTANA H.S. FOOTBALL FANS WHO DON’T RECOGNIZE THE NAME, RON KOWALSKI.
COACH KOWALSKI IS A ROUNDUP NATIVE WHO SPENT 32 YEARS COACHING IN CUT BANK AND 29 OF THOSE YEARS AS HEAD COACH.  HE BEGAN AS THE HEAD COACH IN 1972 AND ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 4-4 RECORD.   THAT WAS A RARITY AMONG THE NEXT 28 YEARS WHERE COACH KOWALSKI HAD ONLY A HANDFUL OF .500 OR BELOW SEASONS.
COACH KOWALSKI’S RECORD OF 206-80-1 RANKS HIM AMONG THE BEST 10 COACHES IN THE STATE AND HE IS ONE OF ONLY 8 COACHES WITH 3 OR MORE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
ALL THREE OF THOSE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS WENT UNDEFEATED AND THE BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1989-90 CULMINATD IN 24 CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES, BUT IT DIDN’T END THERE AS CUT BANK ALSO WON 11 MORE STRAIGHT GAMES IN 1991 BEFORE LOSING TO TROY IN OVERTIME IN THE PLAYOFFS AND ENDING A 35-GAME WINNING STREAK.
FOLLOWING RETIREMENT FROM CUT BANK AFTER THE 2000 SEASON, COACH KOWALSKI BEGAN A FIVE YEAR STINT AS THE RUNNING BACK AND TIGHT END COACH FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA.
