MSU’s Science Math Resource Center, which is part of the College of Education, Health and Human Development and runs the annual statewide competition, will host an online presentation from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, called “Starting a Montana Science Olympiad Team: A Guide for New Coaches.” The presentation will include benefits and logistics of starting a team, how scoring works and events for the upcoming season, plus a few tips from past coaches on recruiting and preparation. The presentation is free, but registration is required. A recording will be available for those who aren’t able to attend live.

The Science Math Resource Center will also host virtual office hours from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, so returning coaches can ask questions about the upcoming season.

Registration links for the new coaches’ presentation and the virtual office hours are under the “news” button on the Science Math Resource Center website.

Science Olympiad is among the largest STEM competitions in Montana, with more than 1,200 students participating in events covering life sciences, chemistry, engineering and other topics. Schools register as a team, with individuals or pairs of students competing in various events. Students can earn medals in events, and the school with the highest number of event points wins the state championship trophy and is eligible to compete in the national tournament. Previously held in November, the Science Olympiad is now held in the spring.
