MISSOULA – A history professor from Ireland’s University of Limerick will discuss “Irish America and the 1916 Rising” as part of the 2016-17 President’s Lecture Series at the University of Montana.

Ruán O’Donnell, a leading research scholar in the field of modern Irish history, will deliver the lecture at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in the University Center Ballroom. The lecture is part of the American Conference for Irish Studies.
O’Donnell also will lead the seminar “Researching Irish Republican Army Prisoners in England, 1968-1998” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. the same day in Gallagher Business Building Room 123. The lecture and seminar both are free and open to the public.
Originally from Dublin, O’Donnell received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University College Dublin and a doctorate from the Australian National University. He has lived and worked as a journalist and teacher in Limerick since 1998.
He teaches courses on the International History of the 20th Century; the Irish Conflict 1948-1998; Modern Ireland; Ireland: Revolution and Independence 1898-1972; and the History of Modern Australia.
O’Donnell’s primary research interests include Irish radicalism worldwide and the history of international pro-Irish Republican networks. His early research focused on the United Irishmen in Ireland, Australia, Britain, France and North America. His more recent work includes a number of linked projects featuring the Irish Republican Army from 1948 to 1998.
            O’Donnell has edited scholarly anthologies, and he works as a commissioning editor for two academic series in Ireland. He writes for The Irish Times and serves as the director of the Irish Manuscripts Commission. He is the official historian of the Robert Emmet Association.
Irish Studies at UM hosts O’Donnell in conjunction with the 32nd annual American Conference of Irish Studies – Western Regional. The conference’s theme is “Her Exiled Children: Ireland and Irish America.”
