Mike Roach of Fairfield is a young man. He's only 42. Mike is the brother of Cathy Deboo and he's been diagnosed with ALS, most commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Lou Gehrig, the famous baseball player, was diagnosed with this disease back in 1939 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and the disease (ALS) was named after him. It is a serious neurological disease that causes muscle weakness, disability, and eventually death. Worldwide, it occurs in 1 to 3 people per 100,000. 90 to 95% of the time, the doctors are uncertain why it happens. These days Mike Roach is completely dependent on the care from others and is residing at home with his more than 70 year old mom. He gets around in a motorized scooter and is working on purchasing special equipment to help him operate it with his sight because he's now unable to do so with his hand. Although almost completely disabled by this disease, Roach is still able to communicate but at times it is difficult for him. His sister, Cathy, says his brain will continue to function completely and eventually EVERYTHING will stop working except for his brain. I cannot imagine being in this position and once again, whenever one starts complaining  or feeling sorry for his or her self, it is always a good  idea to take a look around and see what others in this world are facing. and going through. There's a benefit for Mike this Saturday night at the Fairfield Community Hall. The spaghetti feeds starts at 6 and there's an auction at 8. There will be "live" musical entertainment by the Sodbusters following the auction. All proceeds will help Mike Roach with his medical and disability expenses. If anyone is interested in becoming a care provided to Mike, please contact Easter Seals Home Care at 271 2073. And Mike and Kathy, the best to you!
