One of the best things about living in Montana is the feeling of freedom. No matter where you go in the state, you feel free and almost as if you can do anything you'd like.

Now, of course you have to follow the law and all of that but for the most part, you're free to do what you chose to in Montana... even letting your hair flow in the wind while on a motorcycle.

Montana Stats: Crashes & Motorcycle Incidents

When hunting for the stats, we found limited recent data specifically about motorcycles but were able to find some useful information that can help us paint that picture.

For example, as of June 2025, Montana officials reported 75 fatal crashes with 88 fatalities on the road in 2025 which, at the time, was seven more than 2024 and up 7% from the fiver-year average according to NBC Montana.

According to Montana Department of Transportation, there have been 151 fatalities this year compared to the 163 fatalities this same time in 2024.

According to the Montana Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division, "injuries occur in 90% of motorcycle crashes and 33% of automobile crashes that involve abuse of substances."

Even more alarming, substance abuse causes 2,000 motorcyclists deaths and about 50,000 serious injuries annually. As for accidents, one law firm pointed out that in 2023, there were 298 motorcycle-related crashes in Montana. Also, as NBC Montana pointed out back in August of 2024, motorcycle crashes in Montana increased by 71.4% from 2018 to 2022.

Is It Time For Montana To Make Helmets Mandatory For Motorcycle Riders?

Based on all of the data we provided, it's probably fair to say that motorcycle crashes will only continue and may even continue to rise. But, I'm no lawmaker! I want to know what you think.
