The Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has updated its process for issuing veteran designations on state-issued driver's licenses.

Veterans now have additional options for verifying their military service, simplifying the process, and increasing accessibility.

Expanded Documentation Options

The update allows for the MVD to accept current Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or American Legion membership cards as proof of veteran status for the driver's license designation.

These documents join the previously accepted DD Form 214 and letters from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as valid verification forms.

MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri explained the reasoning behind the update:

“Montana veterans are proud of their service and want to showcase that service on their driver license. This change supports those who defended our freedoms and makes the process easier for them.”

Supporting Montana Veterans

This update is particularly beneficial for older veterans who may not have access to a DD Form 214.

Jeff Schepp, State Adjutant and Quartermaster for the Montana VFW, noted:

“The Department of Montana VFW and its 7,300 members are pleased with the decision to accept VFW ID cards. For some older veterans, this option simplifies the process of obtaining the veteran designation.”

Ken Simon, American Legion Department Commander, also commented on the change:

“This adjustment makes it easier for veterans to display their service by using commonly held membership cards. It is a practical solution for those seeking this recognition.”

Implementation

Veterans interested in adding the designation to their driver's license can now provide any accepted documents—VFW or American Legion membership cards, DD Form 214, or a VA letter—at their local MVD office.

This update reflects the MVD's effort to streamline processes and accommodate the needs of Montana veterans.
