Even more upland bird hunters will soon be hitting the field, with pheasant season opening on October 12, 2024.
The upland bird season up until this point has been relatively mild weatherwise.
But one thing is for sure: upland bird hunters all across Montana will be pleased to know that a significant amount of additional acreage will be available for hunting this year.
Upland Bird Hunting In Montana
The state of Montana has announced that upland bird hunters will have access to an additional 40,000 acres this year.
This is all thanks to the Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program.
A total of 47 new areas were enrolled over the summer months, which significantly boosted hunting opportunities in Montana.
Remember that these hunting areas are not included in the 2024 upland game bird access guide.

The Upland Game Bird Program has significantly expanded the hunting acreage in Montana.
The program has added…
- 20,600 acres of new walk-in hunting access for bird hunters.
- An extra 20,000 acres of Block Management land.
- These projects are spread across northeast, southeast, and north-central Montana.
According to FWP, ten of these new hunting areas are newly seeded U.S. Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program land.
They might not be great for hunting this year, but down the road, they should be awesome.
