How To Avoid Bears

  • Keep garbage, birdfeeders, pet food, and other potential attractants in a secure, bear-resistant building.
  • Avoid feeding wildlife; this causes bears to become conditioned to eat food and return to the same areas.
  • Make sure to carry bear spray or a firearm when in the backcountry.
  • Travel in a group and make noise if possible.
  • Steer clear of animal carcasses as they tend to attract bears.
  • If you run across a bear, never approach it and leave the area.
