Last week, President Trump signed a Proclamation that permitted "an additional 80,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings per year from Argentina to be imported tariff-free in four quarterly tranches of 20,000 metric tons each."

The Proclamation has some folks divided, but there is no question about its inevitable impact on Montana ranchers and agriculture.

Why Does President Trump Want To Import Argentinian Beef?

President Trump and the White House have cited multiple reasons for the Proclamation. According to the site for the White House, "President Trump is responding to market challenges and ensuring a plentiful ground beef supply for American families at affordable prices by taking action on multiple fronts."

The White House reports beef cow inventory being down by 8.6% since 2020 due to various challenges including grazing lands being affected by drought and wildfires, and restrictions on imports from Mexico due to the New World Screwworm.
