Kalispell, MT, March 18, 2022 — The Flathead National Forest is accepting applications for the  2022 Flathead Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program, a conservation and education work-based program for youth between the ages of 15 and 18.

YCC is a program designed to accomplish needed conservation work on public lands, provide gainful employment for students from all segments of society while gaining an environmental understanding and appreciation of natural resources and cultural heritage. It also provides our youth an opportunity to engage in a variety of jobs the Forest Service does and learn about career opportunities within the agency.

“We are excited to host this great program that provides entry level jobs for youth in our Valley while they explore their national forest and the potential careers it offers", said Kurt Steele, Flathead National Forest supervisor. “It’s a pretty rewarding experience to be able to say you did work that directly benefited your local community and public lands”

Applicants will be selected to spend 4-9 weeks of their summer based out of the Flathead National Forest, Tally Lake Ranger District located in Kalispell, MT. Participants will work together with a Forest Service crew leader and Forest Service program staff to complete projects including trail maintenance and construction, wildlife monitoring, landscape restoration projects, visitor support services, resource management, and more all around the Flathead National Forest.

This year’s opportunities are as follows:

  • Option 1: Nine weeks, June 15-August 12
  • Option 2: Five weeks, June 15-July 15
  • Option 3: Four weeks, July 18-August 12

Preference will be given for students interested in the full program (Option 1). Flexible scheduling is possible; please disclose known time-off needed in your application to help us better plan our summer program. All participants must be able to attend mandatory safety and job-related training, regardless of timing of their scheduled session, on June 15 and attend the end of season presentation and awards event on August 12. Participants must have reliable transportation to the district office in Kalispell. Work is physical and will be performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
