Selection of the KSEN/K96—Bozeman trophy athletes of the week this week was a monumental task with so many elite performances from area athletes in tennis, track, softball and golf.

With that said, female athlete of the week honors go to Cut Bank freshman Makenna Burke. Burke has been the primary force on the mound for the wolves all season long and she’s not bad with the bat either. In the Eastern Divisional last week it was a tough road to qualify and move on to the state tournament this week, but the wolves got it done with burke in the circle in every game except the final against Columbus. In the opener against Shelby she had 13-strikeouts and one hit. Cut Bank lost a close second game to Columbus but she still struck out 13. In a win over Glasgow Saturday morning, pitched the complete game, struck out 3 and had two hits and then the real heroics in the next outing against shepherd, Burke struck out 16 and with Cut Bank down one in the 7th, she stepped up and hit the walk-off homerun to give Cut Bank the 9-8 victory. In the final Cut Bank win over Huntley Project, she struck out 12 and picked up her 4th win of the tournament and it was on to the state b starting Thursday in Florence.

Also nominated this week, Natalie Broesder of Conrad who went 4-2 in matches at the state tennis tournament before eventually losing to the eventual state champion in the semi-finals. Also the Choteau doubles team of Christine Funk and Soren Cummings, who had been undefeated and won a divisional title before losing in the state finals.

Our male athlete of the week saved his best for the class B divisional track and field meet in Glasgow. Senior, Gavin Mills of Fairfield had wins in the 100m, the 200m and the 400m, setting a personal best in that 400m. He also picked up a win in the long jump and a second in the triple jump. He already had his best jump in the district meet at 21-feet which placed him in the top 15 all-class in the state and among the top 5 in class b. Mills total point production of 48 led Fairfield to the team championship with 114 points.

Also nominated, and we congratulate them, state doubles tennis champions senior Brett Sneed and junior Dillon Gray of cut bank.

Congratulations to our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy athletes of the week, freshman, Makenna Burke of Cut Bank and senior Gavin Mills of Fairfield. The athlete of the week is sponsored locally by McDonald’s in cut bank. McDonald’s honors our athletes with two free value meals each.
