Athlete of the Week
KSEN/K96 Bozeman Trophy Athlete of the Week honors go to a young player that played a key role in getting Shelby back to the divisional tournament for the first time since 2011 and then almost leading the way to a trophy finish. Sophomore Abbey Aklestad had more than a solid tournament. She was one of only three players to score in double figures against a stingy Malta defense with 11 in the opener of the Northern B Divisional. (The other two were Natalie Klinker (16) and Allie Steinbach (11) in the championship game.) Aklestad exploded for a career high 27 (and a tournament high) on Friday against Harlem as Shelby scored more points than they had in a single game all season with 68 to win the loser-out battle. Aklestad also shot 7-8 from the free throw line and led the team in rebounds with 8. That wasn’t all, as she scored 18 in a tough loss to Glasgow Saturday morning including a game tying shot that sent it to overtime. Aklestad also pulled down 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals in what turned out to be the Coyotes final game of the season, but a game that also provided a lot of optimism for the future.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Athlete of the Week, sophomore Abbey Aklestad of Shelby. The athlete of the week is sponsored locally by McDonalds in Cut Bank. McDonalds provides our athlete’s with two free value meals each.
