“Deer meat and turkey meat and anything wild is about as good as you can get,” Rhett Akins, an avid outdoorsman and hunter, tells Taste of Country when speaking of his wild turkey breast recipe. “The No. 1 main reason this recipe is cool is because you went out and got it yourself. You didn’t go to the grocery store and buy it. You spent hours and sometimes days or weeks trying to get the turkey. So it’s cool to know that you went out and did it on your own, like back in the old days.”

“Plus, I just like how it tastes,” Akins adds. “They’re eating only what nature provides. They’re not being fed by any humans or getting steroids. It’s just the real deal.”

About Rhett Akins:

Akins first made his mark on the country music scene in the early ’90s as an up-and-coming artist on the rise. During that time, Akins cranked out several hit singles, including ‘That Ain’t My Truck,’ ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ and ‘She Said Yes.’ When he and his record label parted ways in 2006, Akins continued to put out music independently, but found his time being absorbed immensely by songwriting.

When the southern-born singer-songwriter wrote ‘Kiss My Country Ass’ with hit songwriter Dallas Davidson in 2004, he discovered a special chemistry between the two of them. Not only were they both Georgia boys, but they shared similar interests and songwriting topics. They then added fellow Georgian Ben Hayslip — Akins’ longtime best friend — into the mix, and today we have the hottest writing team in Nashville, now known as the Peach Pickers.

While working with the Peach Pickers and other songwriters, Akins has been responsible for many of the biggest hits to come out of Nashville in the recent years. He’s penned for artists like Blake Shelton (‘Honey Bee,’ ‘All About Tonight’), Rodney Atkins (‘Farmer’s Daughter,’ ‘Take a Back Road’), Joe Nichols (‘Gimme That Girl,’ ‘The Shape I’m In’), Craig Morgan (‘This Ole Boy’), Luke Bryan (‘I Don’t Want This Night to End’), Frankie Ballard (‘A Buncha Girls’), Brooks and Dunn (‘Put a Girl in It’), Justin Moore (‘Bait a Hook’), Jack Ingram (‘Barefoot and Crazy’), Josh Turner (‘All Over Me’) and many more. The Peach Pickers were recently crowned the 2011 BMI (Akins and Davidson) and ASCAP (Hayslip) Songwriters of the Year.
