They say if you want to be noticed, make a mistake, and boy-howdy, did Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander get noticed, yesterday.

It was the fifth inning. Oakland leading 3-1 with a man on first. Watch the video and see if you can figure out just what the Tigers' tosser was thinking....

Turns out it was a pick-off play gone embarrassingly wrong.

"I went to go pick one and I didn't get my body turned," Verlander said. "The way I thought — and this was all in milliseconds — if I just throw it home, they won't call anything."

Wrong.

It took a while for the umpires to figure out what had just happened. In fact, one of them went to Verlander and asked just what he was trying to do.  In the end, it was ruled a balk, the game resumed, and Verlander got out of the inning with no further incident, though the A's won 6-2.

But which play made the evening sportscasts?
