David Abrams will be telling me about HIS story this afternoon (Wednesday) at 4:30 on the Puffman Program. David is going to be one of the presenters at the 19th Annual Montana Storytelling Roundup in Cut Bank this weekend & his debut novel, "Fobbit" is deals with the Iraq War. "Fobbit" has been named a "New York Times Notable Book of 2012 & a "Best Book of 2012" by Paste Magazine, St. Louis Post-Dispatch & Barnes & Noble. "Fobbit" is like M*A*S*H for the Iraq war, except it stars Information Specialists (aka, military reporters) instead of doctors. It's been getting gang buster reviews from places like the Washington Post & he just did a guest blog for the New York Times website. "They" say the man has a great sense of humor so he should fit right in on my program.David retired in 2008 after a 20 year career in the active-duty Army as a journalist & was named the Department of Defense's Military Journalist of the Year in 1994 & received several other military commendations throughout his career. His tours of duty took him to Thailand, Japan, Africa, Alaska, Texas, Georgia & The Pentagon. In 2005, he joined the 3rd Infantry Division & deployed to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The journal he kept during that year formed the blueprint for the novel which would later become known as "Fobbit". Abrams was born in Pennsylvania (which is cool to me) & there's a picture of David in the back of "Fobbit" & to m, he looks exactly like one of my heroes...Dobie Gillis from one of my favorite television shows back in the 60's!  "Fobbit" is the 1st major work of fiction about America's war for Iraq & as the Library Journal says,, "This ain't Hogan's Heroes"! This is good, we ain't doing brain surgery on the Puffman Show. Looking forward to chewing the fat with David Abrams this afternoon at 4:30 & more than looking forward to seeing & meeting David this weekend in Cut Bank at the 19th Annual Montana Storytelling Roundup. It's THIS Friday evening & all day Saturday at the Cut Bank High School.
