Taylor Swift may have have blossomed into pop, but her roots will always be in country music. Recently, the ‘Welcome to New York’ singer opened up to Esquire magazine about Nashville and what country music has taught her.

“Country music teaches you to work,” she explains of the genre. “You hear stories about these artists who show up four hours late to a photo shoot, and in Nashville that doesn’t happen. In Nashville, if you go four hours late to a photo shoot, everyone leaves. In Nashville, if you don’t care about radio and being kind to the people who are being good to you … it’s a symbiotic relationship, and if you don’t take care of it, then they won’t take care of you.”

Unlike many pop princesses, you won’t find Taylor Swift pulling the diva card. She gives back to her fans, even inviting them into her home for listening parties of her ‘1989’ album. Swift says she’s endlessly appreciative of what Music City and the community of country music have taught her.

“I’ve never been more proud to have come from a community that’s so rooted in songwriting, so rooted in hard work and in treating people well,” Swift gushes. “It was the best kind of training.”

Swift’s new pop album is in stores now. Buy ‘1989’ here.
