Shania Twain on Miley Cyrus: She’s Just Bein’ Miley
A few country stars have already weighed in on Miley Cyrus‘ recent antics, due in part to her association with the genre as Billy Ray‘s daughter and as Dolly Parton‘s goddaughter. Now, Shania Twain has offered a reasoned and objective statement about the pop star, chalking it up to a young girl being a young girl.
In her time, Twain was well-known (and often criticized) for her own daring looks and sexpot style. When asked what she thinks about Cyrus using sexuality to sell her music, the country superstar comments, “I don’t know her personally. I don’t know why she’s doing what she’s doing. So, I don’t really have an opinion on that.”
However, Twain can relate to an artist being an artist. “But you’ve got to do what works for you. Being in that critical eye is a challenge in itself,” Twain says. “If Miley is assessing what she’s doing, and saying ‘This is who I am,’ then I say, do that. Hopefully she’s enjoying it.”
Twain doesn’t turn her nose up at the fact that Cyrus is just 20 and acting so sexualized. “I smile at young artists being young, finding themselves,” she relates. “I think youth is beautiful. I think finding yourself is beautiful and very necessary.”
Now 48, Twain contextualized the comments in terms of her own career, saying that she never felt like she had to go the sexy route to sell records. “I was always comfortable with what I was doing. Looking back, I never felt pressure to exploit myself,” she reveals. “And I remain comfortable with it today. It would be horrific, looking back 20 years later, as I am now, and feeling embarrassed at what I did. I would never want to set myself up for that.”
It would seem that Shania Twain and Miley Cyrus are kindred spirits from different generations!
