During a recent rally in Maryland, President Obama showed that he is not only a great and accomplished orator when giving a speech, but he’s also pretty good at talking with his hands.

While meeting members of the crowd at this event, Obama was filmed using American Sign Language after shaking hands with one lucky hearing impaired student.

Stephon has been deaf since birth, and when he had the chance to shake hands with the President, he wasn’t sure that Obama would understand him when he signed, “I am proud of you.” But to Stephon’s amazement and without missing a beat the president responded “Thank you” in ASL

Stephon made a video in response to his encounter with the President Obama where he had this to say:

The moment I will never forget was when he looked at me. He gave me a chance to talk to him. It was like he was waiting for me to say something. I took the moment and signed “I am proud of you,” and his response was “Thank u” in sign language back! Oh my gosh! I was like wow! He understood me after I said I was proud of him. It was so amazing…I was just speechless.

It pays to be multilingual when you are the President of The United States of America. Not only is it important when discussing foreign policies with leaders of other great nations, but it can also be handy when communicating with your fellow Americans. We’re a diverse melting pot of a nation and it’s really impressive to see that our president is able to speak to everyone.
