Mothers Day weekend is here and there's certainly no shortage of nice things and nice places to for mom on this special Sunday here in the Golden Triangle. Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world, and many of these have roots going all the way back to ancient festivals, like the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria (although I'm not sure how "hilarious" it actually was) or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration. That said, the modern holiday that we celebrate here in north central Montana is a U.S. modern invention and is not related to those celebrations I just blogged about. This "modern holiday" was first celebrated in the U.S. back in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. Ms Jarvis then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the U.S. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. I tend to think that here in the Golden Triangle, that most of us celebrate Mother's Day for all the "right" reasons. For example, our Shelby Senior Center will putting on a Mother's Day program tomorrow (Friday) at noon. The number to RSVP is 434 2992. Saturday night over in Cut Bank, there's going to be a Mother's Day Eve/Ladies Night Out on tap at the Cut Bank Elks from 6 to 9. I understand that there will be over 20 vendors at the Elks on Saturday evening. This Sunday, a Mother's Day brunch is scheduled from 11 to 2 at the Dutton-Brady School cafeteria. All mothers will receive a complimentary gift and the cost is only $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. And here's what's really neat about this Mother's Day brunch...ALL proceeds will support the Dutton-Brady High School students involved with the heritage trip. Tickets are still available by contacting Julia at 788 5809 or the Dutton-Brady School at 476 3424. I always envy folks who are fortunate enough to have a mom who's still alive. Likewise for fathers. Be good to that very special person this weekend and happy Mother's Days to all moms here in the Golden Triangle.
