BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — State prosecutors have filed a negligent homicide charge against a Malta teenager for the October 2010 shooting death of a 16-year-old hunting companion.

The Billings Gazette reports the charge was filed in Phillips County Youth Court on Jan. 15. The death of Logan Wilson was ruled an accident in February.

The charging documents allege the teen, who was 14 at the time of Wilson's death, acknowledged that he was looking through the rifle scope and saw Wilson just before the gun discharged.

Court records say the teen told Sheriff Scott Moran in January 2011 that he had been looking thorough his scope, saw Wilson, and was getting up when he squeezed the trigger. Wilson was shot in the back of the neck.

A hunting consultant found the teen violated safe gun handling standards.
