Call it a grass roots economic stimulus, because that's exactly what it is. Groups of ordinary citizens gather at an appointed time, each with $20 in hand, and a commitment to spend that cash in one lucky local business. The concept began with blogger Chris Smith and has spread rapidly. Click HERE to read more about cash mobs.

The Shelby Area Chamber of Commerce is "hosting" a CASH MOB on Saturday. Here are the details:

1st Shelby Cash Mob
WHEN: Saturday, June 9th at 10:00 am
MEET: In front of the Chamber/ Visitor Information Center
BRING: $20.00 bill and your fun meter
We will announce at that time what business we are going to shop at. At the mob, there are 3 rules:
1.      Gather to find out where we will be shopping.

2.      Spend $20.00

3.      HAVE FUN!

The Chamber is starting this and hopes to have a Shelby Cash Mob every 2 months.  Retail businesses being “mobbed” are drawn randomly.  The Chamber encourages the community to come out, join in the fun of a cash mob and support our local businesses.

“Cash Mobs” isn’t a political or social organization, a corporation, a movement, or meant to be an answer to economic crisis. By and large, those that organize Cash Mobs are simply people trying to make a positive impact on the businesses in their communities (and have fun while doing it)!
The general idea is to encourage people to go into small, local businesses and spend their money, en masse, to give the business owner a little bit of economic stimulus. We’d help businesses grow, we’d make people happy, we get stuff for ourselves, have a great time, and maybe we’d get a beverage afterwards to celebrate.
