We'll be reading MORE on the town of Somers, Montana, up at the Marias Heritage Center during Montana History tonight (Tuesday) & it's fascinating saga for sure. In the early 1900's, the forests around Flathead Lake were primarily western larch, ponderosa pine & Douglas fir. Sawyers cut these trees with crosscut saws & stamped each log with distinctive brands, which were used to identify ownership & for the sawyers to tally & be paid for the trees they cut,. The Somers Lumber Company brand was the Circle N, in part because the good old Great Northern Railway financed the sawmill. ALL ABOARD for MORE Montana History! I'm looking forward to seeing you at 6 o'clock SHARP this evening at the Marias Heritage Center.
