I Know Where I Belong

At least on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7…that’s when I’m reading Montana History at the Marias Heritage Center here in Shelby. The book we’re all enjoying these days centers around a young girl, growing up in Great Falls and Conrad in the early 1940’s as she tries to find “her place of belonging”. She’s Jayne Pearson (her last name in Great Falls before her mom married a Conrad area farmer) and she’s spun a delightful and memorable memoir, “The Place Of Belonging”. Jayne has put together a beautiful presentation in this 190 page read and although we’re not quite three quarters done, I have taken away a great deal from her story. In so many ways, life was simpler in those days and despite lacking our modern conveniences and technology, I’m not so sure that it would not have been nicer to be around and grow up in that era. I would be willing to wager that there was probably a lot less high blood pressure, ulcers, migraine headaches, sleepless nights, and half the population on some kind of antidepressant or other mind altering prescription medication in the 1940’s and 50’s.   I would also think families, friends, and neighbors were a whole lot closer together despite not having the internet, twitter, facebook, etc. Folks might have actually cared for one another in those times. There WERE radio stations around and that is good in my opinion. I know you’ll love reading “The Place Of Belonging” and who knows, you might come away wishing you would have lived in those far simpler, happier, REAL days. See you Tuesday evening at the Heritage Center.
