Some months ago we were dismayed to learn the ‘The Sopranos’ star James Gandolfini‘s upcoming HBO pilot ‘Criminal Justicewouldn’t go to series, despite its impressive pedigree and established BBC predecessor. Now, it seems that ‘Criminal Justice’ will return Gandolfini to HBO after all, moving forward as a limited series! Find out about Tony Soprano’s next gig inside!

‘The Sopranos’ might be dead and buried in the past, but series star James Gandolfini’s ‘Criminal Justice’ has been revealed to be alive and well. Despite HBO’s earlier passing on the project, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Gandolfini’s adaptation of the UK series of the same name will move forward as a seven-episode limited series on HBO.

Adapted from an award-winning 2008 BBC series, the Americanized ‘Criminal Justice’ features Gandolfini as Jack Stone, a “downtrodden jailhouse attorney who frequents police stations for clients.” In his search, the character encounters Naz (Rizwan Ahmed), an American-born Pakistani with no memory of his accused crime of stabbing to death a young woman he’d met.

Having shot this November, the pilot also co-stars Bill Camp as Box, Peyman Moadi as Salim Kahn and Poorna Jagannathan as Safar Kahn, Naz’s parents. ‘Schindler’s List’ Oscar-winning writer Steven Zaillian both directed and co-wrote the pilot, with Oscar-nominee Richard Price. HBO executive produced the project in association with BBC Worldwide, along with Zaillian, Price, Jane Tranter, Moffat, Garrett Basch, Nancy Sanders, Mark Armstrong and Gandolfini himself.

No word on when the new series will debut, but either way, we’re happy to have Tony Soprano back on HBO. Will you check out ‘Criminal Justice’ when it finally premieres?
