Governor Criticizing Republican-Led Legislature

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Gov. Steve Bullock is criticizing the Republican-led Legislature for moving ahead with six voter referendums, saying they disregard the legislative process.

Lawmakers have given their initial approval to the referendums in time for Friday’s transmittal deadline.

They deal with topics ranging from a constitutional amendment on abortion to ending same-day voter registration.

If they receive final legislative approval, the measures will bypass the governor’s desk — and his possible veto — and instead appear on the ballot in 2014.

Bullock said Friday these legislative referendums are a waste of taxpayers’ money and a bad way to run a government.

Bullock says ending same-day voter registration would make it harder for people to vote, while Republicans say same-day registration is a security issue and means long lines at the ballot box.
