A Monday evening fire in the pig barn located on the Milford Colony near Augusta, was reported last night, details are a bit sketchy at this point, but we do know that the barn was fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on the scene, with flames shooting 30 to 40 feet in the air. Up to 3,100 hogs may have perished in the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and we have no reports of human injury.

The colony still is waiting to hear from its insurance company to get an estimate of the value of the loss. Sheriff Leo Dutton said his office investigated the cause. “The investigation revealed there is nothing suspicious,” Dutton said. Colony members did report that power to the colony had fluctuated in the past couple of days, Dutton said. The barn that burned was large. “It was a very hot fire,” Dutton said.
