It looks like the 2011 harvest season has wrapped up. My friend "Gunsmoke" Gary Gollehon tells me that his friend, Todd-The-Custom-Cutter Man, is anticipating driving down to Texas, Oklahoma (a good name for a musical), and Kansas to take a look-see at conditions down in those parts. Winter wheat seeding in the south is fast and furious as there have been some reports of moisture in those states but, unfortunately, no sub-moisture on which to rely.

Wide Open Country star Martina McBride rode the rails last week to promote her latest release, her new album "Eleven". This 4 day, exclusive trip took her all the way from Los Angeles to New York with 11 stops along the way. She performed intimate concerts for fans in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Chicago and New York. The tour was called "Eleven Across America Powered By Amtrak" and this afternoon (Tuesday) at 4:35 on the Puffman Show, I'll be talking with Christina Leeds from Amtrak Public Relations back in Washington D.C. Christina must have one swell job with the Amtrak people...she got to ride along on McBride's train ride.

Smokers have much higher odds of developing bladder cancer than previously believed according to new research from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Neal D. Freedman, an investigator with the institute and an author of the study claims that they have found that current smokers were four times as likely to develop bladder cancer compared with people who never smoked and that former smokers had 2.2 times the risk. While cigarettes are more typically associated with lung cancer, researchers have known for years that smoking also raises the risk of bladder cancer among both men and women. Previous studies based on people who smoked prior to the 1990's had put the risk for smokers at about three times the risk seen among nonsmokers. The researchers are speculating that this new, larger risk may be a reflection of the more toxic chemicals added to cigarettes nowadays--some of which may specifically have a link to bladder cancer.

My friend Gary Gollehon checked in with me today as I try to keep in contact with Gary, especially this time of year, to see what's going on with harvest. I understand that some of the custom cutters have moved north of the border into the Lethbridge area . They report that they tried the canola but it was too green at this time. They think/hope that tomorrow (Tuesday) that the spring wheat will be ready. Meanwhile down in Texas, it's still dry with no rain in sight. In fact, one of the guys says that it's hot enough that the ground temperature is so hot that it is impossible to take a drink of water from the tap, as they do not bury their lines very deep. Therefore, the ground temperature heats up the water in the pipes and gives them warm water in the cold water tap! I think we should send Mayor Bonderud down there to show them how to run a water department! There is also concern with the abandoned wheat acres that were never harvested since the ground is so hard that you can't get a danged plow into the ground, as they need to work the abandoned acres to bury the seed. Over in Oklahoma, the producers planted many acres of cotton which is considered to be a drought tolerant crop.
