How you going to keep them down on the farm

My friend Gary Gollehon checked in with me today as I try to keep in contact with Gary, especially this time of year, to see what's going on with harvest. I understand that some of the custom cutters have moved north of the border into the Lethbridge area . They report that they tried the canola but it was too green at this time. They think/hope that tomorrow (Tuesday) that the spring wheat will be ready. Meanwhile down in Texas, it's still dry with no rain in sight. In fact, one of the guys says that it's hot enough that the ground temperature is so hot that it is impossible to take a drink of water from the tap, as they do not bury their lines very deep. Therefore, the ground temperature heats up the water in the pipes and gives them warm water in the cold water tap! I think we should send Mayor Bonderud down there to show them how to run a water department! There is also concern with the abandoned wheat acres that were never harvested since the ground is so hard that you can't get a danged plow into the ground, as they need to work the abandoned acres to bury the seed. Over in Oklahoma, the producers planted many acres of cotton which is considered to be a drought tolerant crop.

Thoughts of this weekend

With this Sunday marking the 10th anniversary of perhaps the worst tragedy our country has ever experienced, I thought I would put in a call to my friend Peter Franklin, better known as the Gabby Cabby, that wacky New York City cab driver who's been a frequent guest on the Puffman Show for the past 13 years here in Shelby and before that, probably 10 years when I was working on the East Coast. I remember calling Pete 10 years ago a day or two after 911 and being relieved that he and h

Time to fly Old Glory

This coming Sunday, September 11th, we are all being encouraged to display an American flag outside our homes, apartments, offices, and stores. I believe that all of us should make it our duty this Sunday to display Old Glory on this 10th anniversary of one of this country's worst tragedies. I found myself watching some "clips" last evening on CNN and living it all over again.

Obama’s secret weapon

As our lawmakers continue to posture and politicize, the deadline for resolving this danged debt crisis is drawing nearer. But while the GOP and Democratic forces debate and decline one another's proposals, my special guest at 4:35PM this afternoon (Friday) says President Obama alone has the power to prevent a default and a global financial crisis and it's not one of Jim Anderson's Grizzly Sports' free lattaes! Steven Marmon is the man with the answer and he's reported on Congress for the New York Times, wrote about finance for Money Magazine, and is the author of "The Cheaters," a forthcoming book on political sex scandals

England Offers Fertility Lotto for About $35

For about $35, couples in England who are having trouble conceiving can purchase a lottery ticket that could win them customized fertility treatments in one of the nation's top clinics.

Britain's Gambling Commission approved of this bizarre game late last month. As of now, the tickets can be purchased online, but they may soon also be available at newsstands.

Author Josh Kelly Visits Shelby to Talk Jack Dempsey

Back in 1921, not long after oil had started gushing from our northern Montana fields, real estate sales here in Shelby were declining, dimming our little town's prospects of becoming the "Tulsa of the West." Then the mayor's son dreamed up a marketing ploy: offer to host heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey's next fight.

What began as a publicity stunt soon spiraled into a civic drama unlike any Montana had ever seen, or would ever again.

LET FREEDOM RING

Did you know that the Liberty Bell was NOT rung on July 4th, 1776 because the Declaration of Independence was neither signed nor proclaimed on that date? Do you realize that John Hancock was the only one of the 56 signers of the Declaration who actually signed it on July4th! And get this...both Jefferson and Adams, ex-presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence, both died on July4th in 1826, and just a few minutes apart!
