Bomb throwing suspect arrested near Belt

(BELT) – LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FROM SEVERAL AGENCIES

APPREHENDED A MAN NEAR BELT THIS AFTERNOON WHO WAS ARMED WITH PIPE

BOMBS OR SOME TYPE OF EXPLOSIVE DEVICE.

THE MAN WAS APPREHENDED AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND HAS BEEN

IDENTIFIED AS LAURENCE ALAN STEWART II WHO IS WANTED ON NUMEROUS FEDERAL

CHARGES INCLUDING TWO COUNTS OF CAPITAL MURDER.

THE CHARGES ARE IN CONNECTION WITH A PIPE BOMB INCIDENT

THIS PAST TUESDAY IN STAFFORD COUNTY, VA.

STEWART  WAS REPORTEDLY DRIVING A STOLEN CAR AND WAS INITIALLY BEING

PURSUED IN JUDITH BASIN COUNTY HEADED TOWARD GREAT FALLS.

THE CASCADE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT SAID STEWART WAS REPORTEDLY

THROWING PIPE BOMBS OUT OF HIS VEHICLE AT THE PURSUING VEHICLE.

STEWART’S VEHICLE TIRES WERE DAMAGED WITH STOP STICKS EAST OF THE

ARMINGTON JUNCTION, BUT STEWART WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE TOWARDS THE TOWN

OF BELT AND WAS THEN FORCED INTO THE DITCH BY A CASCADE COUNTY PATROL CAR.

STEWART THEN FLED ON FOOT BUT WAS CAUGHT BY AN OFFICER AND ARRESTED.

THE ONLY INJURY AS A RESULT OF THE INCIDENT WAS TO THE DEPUTY WHO PURSUED STEWART AND REPORTED A PULLED MUSCLE AND SCRATCHES.

THE BELT SCHOOL WAS LOCKED DOWN FOR A SHORT TIME BUT WE’RE TOLD THAT

THE NORTHERN C DIVISIONAL VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT THERE, CONTINUED PLAY.

THE INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.
