Earlier this week, Eddie Murphy dropped out of hosting duties for February’s Oscars telecast leaving a large void to fill. (Chances are he would’ve worn a fatsuit.) Who would step in to introduce the presenters and crack jokes about Jack Nicholson keeping his sunglasses on during the show? Ben Stiller? The Muppets? An old standby like Whoopi Goldberg or Billy Crystal?

Turns out, the smart money was on the tried and true, as Billy Crystal announced on Thursday that he would be stepping in to host the Oscars for the ninth time

Right? Because he’s old? (Hoo boy. It’s gonna be one long Oscars telecast…)

Many are speculating that Crystal will open the ceremony with one of his patented montages where he inserts himself into the year’s biggest films. So get ready for Crystal’s head superimposed on the monkey from ‘The Hangover 2.’

The 83rd annual Academy Awards airs Feburary 26th, 2012. In the meantime, check out some of Crystal’s past opening Oscar montages below.

1997 ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’ Opening

1998 ‘Titanic’ Opening

2000 Classic Movies Opening

2004 ‘Lord of the Rings’ Opening

Are you excited for Billy Crystal’s return to the Oscars stage? Or would you rather the Academy have gone with Kermit and the gang?
