ANOTHER Health Warning

Being the Executive Producer of our “Old Fishing Hole” program, I came across an article that got MY attention. A new study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center out in Seattle shows that men who consume high levels of omega-3s in fish or fish oil supplements have a 43% increased risk of developing prostate cancer compared with those who consume low levels. Worse yet, “they” say these “fish oil men” are also 71% more likely to develop high-grade prostate cancer, the type most likely to be FATAL! Fish oil is said to be the most popular supplement in the U.S., but “there is really no evidence that taking dietary supplements is beneficial to health, & there is increasing evidence that taking high doses is harmful, according to the study authors. This study goes on to say that it’s unclear why omega-3s from fish might increase the risk of prostate cancer; fatty acids found in vegetable oils & flaxseeds do not. Study co-author Theodore Brasky says that these finding don’t mean that men should stop eating fish, but they should probably moderate their intake of fatty fish, & they should AVOID fish oil supplements.” I note that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish have long been credited with reducing inflammation & helping to protect again heart disease & Alzheimer’s. At this point in time, I don’t know what to think… I have to go now & get this week’s “The Old Fishing Hole” ready for broadcast tomorrow afternoon!
