Animal Shelter Ordered to Return $189,000 Donation — And You Won’t Believe Why

What’s in a name? Oh, about a couple hundred thousand dollars.

The Friends of Collinsville Animal Shelter in Collinsville, Oklahoma, has to return a donation of nearly $189,000 after learning it was meant for the Friends of Collinsville Animal Shelter in Collinsville, Illinois.

That’s right – two animal shelters, some 400 miles apart and they happen to have the same unlikely name.

It seems the shelter in Oklahoma — which is also known as the Ward-Wiseman Animal Haven — received the money from a late Arizona woman, who requested in her will the funds go to the Friends of Collinsville Animal Shelter. The check cleared without any incident and it seemed that would be the end of the matter.

However, Susan Babbitt, who runs the Oklahoma facility says lawyers called her to say a mistake had been made and the money was meant for the Friends of Collinsville Animal Shelter in Illinois, since renamed the Warren Billhartz Collinsville Animal Shelter.

Babbitt said the issue has devastated her:

To have something to hold us together … where we would be solvent for the rest of the life of the shelter … it was just a gift from God in my opinion. And then it wasn’t.”

The Oklahoma shelter is accepting donations, so if you’d like to contribute, you can still reach out to help.
