In the upcoming Disney movie ‘Maleficent,’ Angelina Jolie will play the titular evil queen, who is the villain of the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ story. The movie follows the ‘Wicked’-inspired trend of seeing a story through the villain’s eyes, while getting a glimpse into the full range of Maleficent’s history and personality, rather than showing her just as a one-dimensional mean girl.

The actress looks forward to being able to show the film to her six children with husband Brad Pitt. She believes the script gives the villainous character redeeming qualities. Jolie said, “I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.”

Jolie definitely doesn’t mind her children seeing her as an evil character and she doesn’t see the film as being anti-princess. “It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain,” she said. But, in this retelling of a classic fairy tale, she says Maleficent “is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.”

Jolie herself is having fun exploring the role, especially now that she has been fitted for her horns. She said to Entertainment Weekly about her costume fittings, “Wait until you see the horns. We’re experimenting with different things, but the horns are the horns  — you can’t deny them. You have to have horns.”

The film is just beginning production and is set for release sometime in 2013. No word on whether her leg will make a cameo appearance.
