Heroic 13-Year-Old Drives School Bus After Driver Passes Out

Jeremy Wuitschick

13-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick got to drive, something most kids his age only dream about doing. However, the circumstances in which the seventh-grader took the wheel were far from ideal.

Jeremy and 15 of his schoolmates were riding to school in the yellow bus when the driver started flailing his hands in the air and making moaning sounds. Displaying almost preternatural quickness, Jeremy rushed to the front of the bus and started steering for the driver, who was suffering from a heart attack.

“I knew something was wrong,” he told ABC. “It was pretty scary. I was just acting on instinct. It was all happening really quickly.”

Not content to just save his classmates, Jeremy also started administering CPR to the driver as he steered.

“I’ll tell you, I’ll give the kid credit for fast thinking. He did the right thing and we’re going to do something for him. The kid definitely deserves credit,” Milton, WA, police chief Bill Rhodes said.

After Wuitschick was able to safely guide the bus to the side of the road, a school administrator who happened to be driving right behind them entered the vehicle and completed CPR on the driver, who survived but is listed in “grave” condition.
